Making Compost in a Bottle
Children will learn about composting in an interactive way through discussing what composting is and learning the important role composting plays in reusing our fruit and vegetable scraps. Children will create a ‘Compost in a bottle’ letting them see how the process evolves over time.

Exploring Compost Creatures
Discover the wonderful creatures that live in our soil and compost, and learn about their roles and why they are important. Children will explore compost samples to find a variety of creatures, using magnifying glasses and microscopic lenses to see them in greater detail. Creating their own mini booklet by drawing the invertebrates they discover and identify.

Waste Incursion
This incursion will help children understand the bins your service and council use. Which bins are used for which items and where our waste goes. This waste sorting activity will help children understand these ideas by giving them hands on practise with an expert. Finishing the incursion with a fun re-use craft, to highlight the importance of reusing things.

Nesting Native Birds
Australian birds have many ways of creating a nest and they are not all a wooden box. See a range of native local bird nests up close. Finding material in nature, then adding clay, and using their fingers as beaks to create a Mudlark nest, students will create their own bird nests.

Traveling Turtles
Learn about the native southwest snake neck turtle including where they live, what they eat and their different features. Become familiar with the turtle’s life cycle through role play and creating a model wetland. The children then create a turtle out of clay, describing the different parts of the anatomy.

Nurturing Nature Art
Children will be encouraged to be creative using materials found in nature. Using a seek and find matching colours game to help them observe what is in the garden/ playground and talking about the links between nature and art. The children will create beautiful artworks, using weaving techniques and found materials.
